SMS Demag to Provide 4th Continuous Caster for Salzgitter Flachstahl

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), Germany, has placed an order with SMS Demag for an X-Cast slab caster in Salzgitter (SGA 4).  Designed as a bow-type caster, the new single-strand caster will produce slabs of widths ranging from 1100 to 2600 mm in thicknesses of 250 and 350 mm.

Caster equipment will include several Intelligent Slab Casting (ISC®) modules, including the hydraulically driven resonance oscillation system, remote-controlled mold narrow faces for width change during casting, and the position-controlled CYBERLINK segments for performing Dynamic Soft Reduction. These modules, combined with the width-dependent air-mist secondary cooling and the Dynamic Solidification Calculation process model, will help to assure the production of slabs with a high internal quality.

The new caster’s bow-type design with a constant radius of 11.5 meters will help to minimize stresses in the strand shell and produce superior surface quality. This will facilitate the production of steel grades with critical crack susceptibility in a reliable and productive manner.

SMS Demag's scope of supply comprises the basic and detail engineering, supply of all mechanical components and the complete X-Pact® electrical and automation systems, including control systems and process models. SMS Demag will also supply solid structures and structural steelwork, a new water supply and treatment system, as well supervision of erection and commissioning. The order will be handled on a turnkey basis.

Salzgitter Flachstahl will use its new machine to cast highly demanding micro-alloyed steels, heavy-plate grades and sour-gas-resistant tube and pipe grades according to the API-5L and HIC standards. The 350-mm thickness option will make it possible for the facility to provide slabs for heavy-plate production in promising, completely new dimensional ranges.

Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for the beginning of 2010. Salzgitter Flachstahl’s three existing continuous casters—CCM 1, 2, and 3—were also supplied and put into operation by SMS Demag.

X-Cast is an SMS Demag trademark from the Continuous Casting Division.
