SMS Demag to Supply Heavy Plate Mill for Yingkou
04/22/2007 - Minmetals Yingkou Medium Plate has placed an order with SMS Demag for construction of a heavy plate mill, including the associated electrical and automation systems.
Minmetals Yingkou Medium Plate Co. Ltd., China, has placed an order with SMS Demag, Germany, for construction of a heavy plate mill, including the associated electrical and automation systems. The new works will be built in Yingkou in the Liaoning Province in northeastern China.
For the new heavy plate mill, SMS Demag will supply the mechanical equipment, electrical and automation systems for the entire process line with roughing and finishing stands. SMS Demag will also supply a plate cooling system, hot plate leveler, cooling and inspection beds, and shear line and finishing line, including a cold-plate leveler.
Both mill stands will have a rolling force of 120 MN each, which ranks them among the most powerful in the world. They are designed to roll plates up to a thickness of 420 mm, and the finishing stand is equipped with the CVC plus® technology. The plate cooling system is designed as a laminar cooling system. Provision has been made for subsequent expansion of the system to include the pre-leveler and spray cooling.
In order to ensure a smooth cutting edge for extremely high-strength plates, the cropping and dividing shears have a closed-type design. The patented cold-plate leveler can be operated in the nine- or five-roll mode with an extended leveling range.
With an initial capacity of approximately two million tonnes/year, the plant will be capable of subsequent expansion to a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes/year. The focus of production is on pipe grades, shipbuilding plates, high-strength structural plates, and plates for the construction of pressure vessels and boilers.
Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for autumn 2009. The entire automation system will be pre-installed in SMS Demag’s test field and tested according to the Plug & Work concept. Plug & Work simulates the production sequence and allows the automation functions to be tested and optimized under realistic conditions prior to mill installation.
