SMS Demag to Support Second JSW Expansion Phase

Jindal South West Steel Ltd. (JSW Steel), India, has placed an order with SMS Demag for the extension of its steelworks and for the supply of two X-Cast continuous casters.

The supply scope for the X-Melt steelworks with two 175-tonne BOF converters comprises the lamella suspension system developed by SMS Demag, converter tilt drives, blowing lance system, bottom stirring equipment, slag retention systems and materials management. The scope also includes the primary dust collection system, including the gas switch-over station and the 50,000-cubic-meter gas tank. The recovered converter gas is able to replace up to 80 million cubic meters of natural gas each year, thus helping to considerably lower both energy costs and the output of CO2.

SMS Demag’s scope of supply also includes two single-strand slab casters with a total production capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per year. With a maximum casting speed of 1.85 meters/minute, the casters will produce slabs in gages of 220, 260 or 300 mm and in widths between 1000 and 2200 mm.

Caster equipment includes several Intelligent Slab Casting (ISC®) modules that help to control quality and production. This will include the hydraulically driven resonance oscillation system, remote-controlled mold narrow faces for width change during casting, and the position-controlled CYBERLINK segments for performing Dynamic Soft Reduction. Width-dependent air-mist secondary cooling and the technological Dynamic Solidification Calculation process model will also help to further ensure high internal quality.

SMS Demag will also supply the X-Pact® electrical system and automation package, erection supervision, training of operating personnel, and commissioning.

In Toranagallu, JSW Steel already operates a steelworks and two continuous casters supplied by SMS Demag. A further works complex, with an annual production capacity of over 5 million tonnes of slabs, is presently being built in two phases at the same location. The steelworks, with a BOF converter and single-strand slab caster (Phase 1), was ordered in 2006 and will go into operation during the course of this year. Commissioning of the Phase 2 plant and equipment is scheduled for the middle of 2009.

The capacity increase will enable JSW Steel to help meet the growing demand for automotive and tube steel grades in India.
