SMS group Completes Modernization of WISCO’s High-Capacity Hot Strip Mill

SMS group said the work was implemented due to a lifecycle partnership where it will upgrade the mill in multiple stages to keep the plant state-of-the-art to continuously improve production efficiency and product quality.

The hot strip mill was originally delivered by SMS group in 2003. It is a 2,250 mm mill with a capacity of 4.8 million metric tons annually. It features reheating furnaces, a slab sizing press that can handle slabs 230 to 250 mm thick and 800 to 2,150 mm wide, a two-high roughing mill, a four-high roughing mill and a seven-stand finishing mill. Final product dimensions range from 1.2 to 25.4 mm thick and 700 to 2,130 mm wide.

The scope included replacement and upgrade of the existing X-Pact® profile, contour and flatness control system (PCFC). The PCFC stabilizes the rolling process and improves product quality, the company said. The replacement was executed in shadow mode and completed within four weeks.

The modernization also included installation of new CVC® blocks in rolling stands F1–F7.

The new upgrades are in addition to prior modernizations SMS group made to the mill between 2013 and 2024.
