According to SMS group, the order includes the vessel, trunnion ring, a lamella-type suspension system, trunnion bearings, gear reducer, hydraulic torque compensator system, and SMS group’s X-Pact® electrical and automation systems for the compensator.

The company also will supervise installation and commissioning.  

The gearbox will be built at an SMS workshop in Germany and will feature a main gear measuring 137.8 inches in diameter. 

“The main gear will be one of the largest applied in a converter drive system in the world,” SMS group said. 

The company said it intends to ship the complete vessel and trunnion ring assembly in one piece, which should reduce on-site assembly costs.  

Some preliminary work is scheduled to take place later this year, but the vessel replacement has been set for the second quarter of 2021.
