SMS Meer to Provide Two Closed-Die Forging Lines for CNHTC Jinan

China National Heavy Duty Truck Jinan Power Co. Ltd. (CNHTC), China, has placed orders with SMS Meer for the supply of two closed-die forging lines. CNHTC will use these facilities, which will be provided by SMS Meer’s Eumuco Hasenclever Closed-Die Forging Division, for forging truck crankshafts, front axles and stub axles.

The forging lines will feature fully automated main presses—a 12,500-tonne wedge press and an 8000-tonne eccentric press. Material will be transported to the two presses by fully automated robots. The lines will be capable of production rates between 400,000 and 450,000 parts per year.

The 12,500-KP wedge press has been designed for forging longitudinally oriented pieces such as crankshafts and front axles. It features a high transverse rigidity that helps to provide high resistance to tilting and to the extensive table load resulting from these characteristics.

The 8000-MP eccentric press will be used to forge truck stub axles of weights up to 50 kg. The eccentric press pressure rod width and the ram width are in a ratio of almost 1:1, helping to provide a high working accuracy when forging in several forming stages.

SMS Meer will supply the engineering for the complete closed-die forging lines, comprising the higher-level control system with all auxiliary units, die holders and die design, gripper technology for robot automation, and the entire process know-how. The forging lines ordered by CNHTC will be erected in the new works in Jinan (Shandong Province), which is currently under construction. Production is scheduled to start in mid-2011.
