South Steel Company, part of Pan Kingdom Invest, Saudi Arabia, has placed an order with SMS Meer, Germany, to design and deliver a combined wire rod and bar mill to be built in Jizan Economic City in southern Saudi Arabia. The new mill will have an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes.
The new combined mill comprises a 100 tonnes/hour walking beam furnace for billets with dimensions of 150 mm x 150 mm x 14 m. The roughing, intermediate and finishing mill consists of 16 housingless stands in an H/V arrangement. One of the key components of the wire rod outlet is the ten-stand finishing block featuring MEERdrive® technology, SMS Meer’s state-of-the-art, highly advanced single drive technology.
Product rolled on this block are fed via the laying head to the loop cooling conveyor (LCC®), or to the cooling bed via an HSD® high-speed delivery system. Located at the entry end of the cooling bed, SMS Meer’s patented HSD system enable bars to be processed at speeds of up to 41 meters/second. Integrated quenching and self-tempering facilities are available for both lines.
The plant also has a fully automatic bundling and tying station for bars, as well as a coil handling line including coil compactor.
The new mill is to commence production in mid-2013.
SMS Concast and SMS Meer had previously supplied a complete minimill for this complex, comprising a steel plant with an annual production rate of one million tonnes and an integrated rolling mill for the production of rebars with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes.
