SMS Siemag to Supply Submerged Arc Furnaces for Erdos Junzheng
03/02/2011 - Erdos Junzheng Energy & Chemical Industry has awarded a contract to SMS Siemag to supply four submerged arc furnaces for the production of calcium carbide.
Erdos Junzheng Energy & Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. has awarded a contract to SMS Siemag to supply four submerged arc furnaces for the production of calcium carbide.
The furnaces, each of which will have a power rating of 46.5 MW t, are currently the largest ones of this type in China. Located in Wuhai in Inner Mongolia, the furnaces will produce around 500,000 tonnes annually of high quality calcium carbide for the local market.
In addition to the basic and detail engineering for the whole furnace plant, SMS Siemag's scope includes the supply of electrode strings, high-current lines, hydraulic systems and the automation system.
Calcium carbide produced by the furnaces will be converted in a newly erected works complex into acetylene, an important prime material for the plastics and foam-rubber industry. In producing acetylene from calcium carbide, the company plans to replace crude oil with locally occurring raw materials such as coal and limestone, which are abundantly available in Inner Mongolia.
Accounting for more than 16.4 million tonnes/year, China is currently the world's largest producer of calcium carbide. While a large proportion of the calcium carbide is currently produced in small units, it is expected that smaller furnaces will be replaced by larger submerged arc furnaces in the mid-term in order to increase environmental protection.
Commissioning of the new furnaces is scheduled for 2012.
