SSAB Introduces New Press-Hardening Steel
11/07/2017 - SSAB has rolled out a new press-hardening steel that initially was designed as a lightweighting solution for automotive bumpers.
In a statement, SSAB said the steel, called Docol PHS 2000, has the highest tensile strength of any of its press-hardening steels.
"For many years, press-hardening steels have been used for complex geometries and high strength. The advantage of Docol PHS 2000 is a higher strength with the same crash performance as our previously strongest press hardening steel. The product is special in that you can keep the ductility, while increasing the strength," said José Puente Cabrero, SSAB Europe’s cold-rolled products manager.
The company said Docol PHS 2000 was developed collaboration with auto parts manufacturer Gestamp, which was looking for a way to lighten a bumper component.
"Docol PHS 2000 achieved this with a 17% weight reduction compared to similar steel bumpers and a lower weight than comparable bumpers made from aluminum," the company said.
