SSAB Reaches Settlement Over Unplanned Outage
12/13/2017 - Sweden’s SSAB has settled with its insurance company and an equipment supplier for SEK315 million (approximately US$37.4 million) over an unplanned shutdown in late 2016 and early 2017.
The problem came about in December 2016 as a rolling mill at SSAB’s special steels plant in Oxelosund was being restarted.
SSAB said the mill had undertaken a planned outage to replace the power supply control system. However, as the mill was starting up, a short circuit occurred, damaging a transformer and knocking the plant off-line for about a month.
After the repair was completed and the mill was being restarted for a second time, another short circuit damaged another transformer, keeping the plant off-line for an additional three weeks.
SSAB estimated that the problems cost it about 70,000 metric tons in lost production.
