SSAB Selects Fives to Upgrade Its Furnace Control
11/25/2025 - SSAB has selected Fives to modernize the control system of the reheating furnaces at its Raahe site in Finland.
The two Stein Digit@l Furnace® machines have undergone multiple refurbishments since their original installation in the 1990s. Due to new production needs and the end of software support for the existing system, SSAB has decided to implement the latest-generation level 2 control system. Fives said it will also install its thermal optimizer, Virtuo™-R, to automate furnace control.
“Integrating this digital solution will improve reliability, data visibility and adaptability to new steel grades. It’s a strategic advancement for our site,” said Mika Leino, project engineer at SSAB Europe OY.
Other features will include Smart Monitoring to consolidate operational data from Virtuo-R data through dashboards. This will provide real-time performance indicators, enable process and quality monitoring, detect anomalies, and anticipate maintenance needs, the company said.
“Our teams are working closely with SSAB to tailor the solution to their specific requirements and existing infrastructure,” said Maxime Monnoyer, technical sales manager — steel digital factory at Fives.
Fives said the modernization will take place over a 12-month period without interrupting production.
