Steel Industry Reps to Deliver Testimony in Section 301 Investigation
05/06/2026 - Representatives of the U.S. steel industry are expected to testify Thursday as to the detrimental effects of excess industrial capacity and production in 16 economies, including China, the EU, Mexico and Japan.
The testimony before the U.S. Trade Representative’s office is part of its Section 301 investigation into whether the acts, policies and practices of certain economies are posing a burden on U.S. commerce.
According to the Reuters news service, the investigation is likely to lead to new tariffs as the Trump administration looks to replace measures struck down earlier this year by the Supreme Court.
Reuters said Brandon Farris, executive vice president of the Steel Manufacturers Association, will deliver prepared testimony arguing that Section 301 tariffs are needed “to confront the scourge of excess capacity, which threatens American jobs, undermines fair competition and erodes our manufacturing base.”
