Steel Minister Reviews Progress of Jagdishpur SAIL Unit

Shri Beni Prasad Verma, Steel Minister, Government of India recently reviewed progress of the ongoing modernization of the Jagdishpur SAIL Unit (JSU). While expressing satisfaction over the status and progress, he commended the SAIL team for nearing completion of the Warehouse and Galvanized Sheet Corrugation Unit.

SAIL acquired the assets of the former M/s Malvika Steel at Jagdishpur (U.P.) in 2009. To supply value-added finished products to meet the demand of the region, SAIL initially proposed four main units under Phase 1.

SAIL Chairman C.S. Verma noted that the revival work is going on as per schedule and that two units — a Warehouse and a Galvanized Sheet Corrugation unit — are in final stages and shall be ready for commissioning very soon. The warehouse will have a capacity of 12,000 tonnes per annum, and the galvanized sheet corrugation unit will have a capacity 13,000 tonnes per annum.

Work for two more units under the current phase — a TMT Bar Mill and a Crash Barrier Manufacturing unit — is progressing as per schedule and shall be completed by November 2011. The TMT bar mill will have a capacity 150,000 tons per annum and the crash barrier manufacturing unit will have a capacity 10,000 tonnes per annum. The inputs of GP sheets, billets and hot rolled sheets for all these facilities will be sourced from the existing plants and units of SAIL. Finished products will be dispatched by road.

For Phase-2, SAIL is holding discussions with M/s KOBE Steel of Japan. A Joint Task Force Team has been formed that is likely to submit its report in March 2011 regarding development and construction of a 1000-mW gas-based power plant and a steel plant based on gas-based direct reduced iron making and EAF-based steelmaking for the production of value-added products.

SAIL is carrying out many activities under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in and around Jagdishpur. The school inside the campus has been renovated with basic amenities and a playground, and 210 children have been registered with the school and are studying. Regular medical health check-up camps have been organized in nearby villages/ schools and necessary medicines disbursed. A medical health center with one doctor and two pharmacists is now functional and one ambulance is also in operation. Many patients are being examined daily in the health center and free medicines are provided to them.

The Hon’ble Steel Minister stated that for further industrial development of the State of Uttar Pradesh, SAIL will also examine the feasibility of setting up a Steel Processing Unit at Barabanki/Gonda.
