Sumitomo Extinguishes Fire, Plans for Restart at Kashima Following Earthquake

Sumitomo Metals reports that it did not have any injuries or casualties related to the 8.9-magnitude earthquake on March 11.
 
The company has suspended all production lines at its Kashima Steelworks, which is located in Kashima-City, Ibaraki. The facility comprises a blast furnace-based integrated steel mill, mainly for automotive steel sheet and shipbuilding steel plate.
 
The company said that the fire in the Kashima Works’ coke gas holder has been extinguished.
 
The earthquake has damaged Kashima Steelworks’ facilities such as gas holders, coke ovens, blast furnaces and port facilities. There are no tsunami-related submerged areas.
 
The company reports that its other sites in Japan are operating normally, and that it is focusing all its resources to restart the facilities in Kashima as soon as possible.
