Tata Steel Division Honored for Safety Performance at Coal Mines Safety Week

The Golden Jubilee annual coal mines safety week for the Ranchi-Koderma Region recently culminated with a prize distribution ceremony at Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division. The chief guest for the occasion was M. M. Sharma, Director General of Mines safety for the Govt. of India.
 
Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division won 15 prizes for its performance in the area of safety. Quarry–AB received the overall first prize and also got first prize in Haul Road/Traffic Rules, and first prize in Lighting. Quarry–South East was given the second prize in Mine working and also second in Dust suppression/Fire fighting. Quarry–E was adjudged first in the publicity and propaganda records. Model from West Bokaro also got the third prize. Eight employees of West Bokaro won prizes for the trade test in the Excavation and Mining category.
 
While addressing the gathering, M. M. Sharma, the chief guest, said, “Today, mining is categorized as one of the most hazardous and challenging responsibilities, that requires a constant vigil and attention to ensure safety at work and meet the targets set in due course. It is heartening to see that the year 2007 has been recorded as the year with the lowest [number of] accidents in the history of mining industries. This achievement has been possible only through the continuous efforts of technical expert of coal companies.”
 
“It is our moral responsibility to avoid accidents and observe safety rules laid down,” said A M Mishra, Vice President (Raw Material) for Tata Steel. “Safety is of utmost importance and no compromise must be done in this area.”
 
The prize distribution ceremony included a traditional tribal dance performance, and the chief guest also hoisted the safety flag and released a souvenir to mark the occasion. There were also exhibits that displayed various aspects and importance of maintaining and observing safety practices.

Tata’s West Bokaro Division has fully mechanized Eco-Friendly open cast mines producing 5.5 million tonnes of raw coal per year. The Division is also certified in Environment Management System ISO-14001 (first in coal industries), Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra Award, OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) 18001, National Energy Conservation Award and other awards in different areas such as safety, quality, and customer orientation.
