Tenova and Salzgitter Shake Hands on 2.1-Million-Ton DRI Plant
03/08/2022 - Tenova has signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Salzgitter AG to build a 2.1-million-metric-ton direct reduced iron (DRI) plant, the supplier announced today.
The new plant will feature ENERGIRON technology, which allows for flexible and increased use of hydrogen as a reducing gas in DRI production.
Tenova and Salzgitter said the new plant is in step with the steelmaker’s SALCOS® — SALzgitter Low CO2-Steelmaking — decarbonization project.
“The agreement with Tenova is a momentous milestone in the implementation of the SALCOS program,” said Salzgitter AG chief executive Gunnar Groebler. “It enables us to be in a position to commence directly with the construction phase for realizing low-CO2 steel production, once approval has been given to the public funding requested. SALCOS secures the future sustainability of Salzgitter as a steel location and the jobs there.”
Construction on the plant is expected to begin this summer.
