This Girder System is for Shorter Bridges and the Budget-Minded
10/12/2016 - A group made up of universities, government officials and the steel industry representatives have developed a new type of short-span bridge girder that’s less expensive to make and easier to install, reports the Engineering News-Record.
According to the publication, the girder is a shallow, modular galvanized trapezoidal box fabricated from cold-bent structural plate. The advantage, the publication said, is that the girder can be made on a press brake -- as opposed to being cut and welded -- using standard-sized mill plate.
As a result, fabrication costs are cut in half, it said.
