Tikhvin Smelting Plant Gains ISO 9001:2008 Compliance
12/11/2009 - As a result of an audit conducted by TUV SUD, Tikhvin Smelting Plant (TFZ JSC) has obtained the certificate of compliance with the quality management system standard ISO 9001:2008. TFZ JSC is consolidated by Oriel Resources Ltd., which is Mechel OAO’s ferroalloy sub-holding.
As a result of an audit conducted by TUV SUD in late November, Tikhvin Smelting Plant (TFZ JSC) has recently obtained the certificate of compliance with the quality management system standard ISO 9001:2008. TFZ JSC is consolidated by Oriel Resources Ltd., which is Mechel OAO’s ferroalloy sub-holding.
Mechel says that TUV SUD specialists recognized high-quality planning and accounting at the plant, a good level of technical documentation preparation, permanent and thorough analysis of the plant’s production key figures, and a high level of competence and qualification of the plant’s personnel.
Auditors also marked the work of the plant’s production and technical teams that collect and study a “huge volume” of statistics, which helps to minimize operational costs and ensure information security, according to Mechel.
The plant’s production process management was yet another strong point, says Mechel. The controlling system enables the plant’s machines and all the production stages to be monitored online. Production plan performance reports as well as reports on raw materials utilization and quality of the output are issued at Tikhvin Smelting Plant daily.
“Having obtained the Certificate of compliance with the international quality management system standard ISO 9001:2008, TFZ JSC strengthened its market positions and proved high competitiveness of Mechel’s enterprises,” said Alexey Ivanushkin, Oriel Resources Ltd.’s CEO. “It’s worth mentioning that less than a week passed between the completion of the certification audit and our receiving the Certificate. As the auditors noted, it was the first time in their Russian practice, when a plant showed such a good level of preparation and process organization.”
One of Russia’s leading mining and metals companies, Mechel’s business includes four segments: mining, steel, ferroalloy, and power. The company unites producers of coal, iron ore concentrate, nickel, steel, ferrochrome, ferrosilicon, rolled products, hardware, heat, and electric power. Its products are marketed domestically and internationally. TFZ JSC manufactures high-quality, high-carbon ferrochrome, which is used mainly for stainless steel production.
