11/24/2025 - U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed two Department of Commerce officials to monitor United States Steel Corporation’s compliance with the golden share agreement the U.S. government made with Nippon Steel, according to a letter filed in the U.S. Federal Register.
In the letter addressed to Scot Duncan, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of U. S. Steel, Trump appointed the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, William Kimmitt, as his designee.
This appointment will allow Kimmitt to veto decisions that include changing U. S. Steel’s name, moving its headquarters from Pittsburgh, Pa., USA, relocating the company outside the U.S. or closing production facilities.
Trump also appointed the Chief Counsel of the Department of Commerce’s Investment Accelerator, David Shapiro, as a director on U. S. Steel’s board representing the U.S. government, the letter said.
