U. S. Steel Board Announces New Projects in Pennsylvania, Indiana

U. S. Steel said it is in the process of submitting an air construction permit for the new slag recycler at its Edgar Thomson Plant. Once the permit is approved, engineering planning will be finalized. The project will cost about US$100 million, with construction expected to begin next year.

Helping give new life to byproducts of steelmaking, the slag recycler provides an opportunity to reduce air emissions and waste that would have otherwise gone to a landfill. It also generates additional revenue through the sale of byproducts.

The company said it will also spend about US$200 million to improve the Gary Works hot strip mill. This will optimize production costs and expand premium product offerings including heavy-gauge line pipe and automotive steel.

These investments represent the most recent activity underway as part of Nippon Steel’s investments in U. S. Steel. Multiple other initiatives across the company are also advancing to upgrade infrastructure, enhance capabilities and modernize facilities, the company said.
