U. S. Steel Clairton Coke Plant Places Batteries on Hot Idle, Continues Investigation
09/05/2025 - United States Steel Corporation announced it has successfully placed both batteries involved in the Clairton coke plant accident last month on hot idle and is in the process of inspecting them.
The company said the hot idle state allows batteries #13 and #14 to maintain their temperature as investigators assess any damage to the ovens and determine the course of action to repair them. There is currently no production taking place on them.
Batteries #19 and #20, which were temporarily impacted by the accident, are back in full production.
Allegheny County air monitors did not find any exceedances of air pollutants during the process, the company said.
