U. S. Steel to Assess Batteries Involved in Clairton Coke Plant Accident

The batteries involved, #13 and #14, will be inspected for any damage to the ovens and to determine if they can be repaired. They will be placed into a hot idle state to maintain their integrity but no coking or production will take place.

“Without placing them on hot idle, the batteries will not be able to function ever again,” U. S. Steel explained in a statement.

The company said the process is expected to take a few days.

While they don’t expect any elevated nonparticulate pollution to occur because of the process, there is potential for some ashy particles to be released as the coke is removed. They will keep the Allegheny County Health Department informed.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
