U. S. Steel to Stop Steel Production at Granite City Works in Illinois

U. S. Steel said workers will maintain the plant so it is operational in case anything changes. The workers will keep their jobs until at least 2027, as part of the national security agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Nippon Steel that allowed its purchase of U. S. Steel to proceed, the Associated Press News reported.

In a statement, U. S. Steel said it will focus on processing raw steel at its Mon Valley Works facilities in Pennsylvania and Gary Works in Indiana.

“As we continue to push U. S. Steel for details on how this impacts our members, we intend to hold Nippon accountable to the promises it made over the past year and a half to secure its deal,” said United Steelworkers district director in Illinois Mike Millsap.

The United Steelworkers union local in Granite City told its members that U. S. Steel is developing a severance package. However, U. S. Steel said there will be no layoffs because of the decision, reported the Associated Press News.
