U. S. Steel’s European Mill to Become Nippon Steel Subsidiary

By making the 61-year-old operation a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon, rather than a wholly owned subsidiary of U. S. Steel, the plant will become a core hub for Nippon’s European operations, it said in a statement.

“Europe is undergoing a major structural transformation due to trends in decarbonization and geopolitical uncertainties. It is also a market with a high intraregional self-sufficiency rate due to factors including tariffs, safeguards, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Nippon Steel therefore finds it important to capture the growing demand as an insider,” it said.

The change will be become effective on 1 October, and the plant will be renamed Nippon Steel Slovakia s.r.o.

Nippon Steel said the change will allow U. S. Steel will concentrate its management resources on its U.S. operations and enable Nippon Steel Group’s management resources to be brought to bear on improving the plant’s competitiveness in Europe.

“Going forward, Nippon Steel will further deploy cutting-edge technology and management resources to USSK to enhance its business foundation, while also advancing mid- to long-term investments, including decarbonization initiatives. Through these efforts, we will continue to contribute to European industry and our customers,” said Takahiro Mori, representative director and vice chairman of Nippon Steel and chairman of U. S. Steel.
