Workers Initiate Unlawful Strike at Rautaruukki’s Raahe Works

Trade Union employees at Rautaruukki's Raahe Works in Finland initiated a strike at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21. According to the company, the workers' action conflicts with the commitment to industrial peace that is included in their collective bargaining agreement.

The strike has stopped hot rolling until Saturday morning (Feb. 23), and steel production is running at half capacity. Despite the strike, Rautaruukki is still maintaining all functions essential to personnel, processes, and environmental safety.

Information that had been delivered to Rautaruukki indicated that workers on the day shift would return to work at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, and that shift workers would return at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. The workers stated wage disputes as the reason for the strike.

On Feb. 20, the Labour Court judged the trade union branch's threat to call a strike on Feb. 21 as unlawful, and ordered the branch to pay the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries compensatory damages for breaking the commitment to industrial peace.
