Metinvest’s Steel Shipments to CIS Up 90% in 2010

08 December 2010 - For 10 months of 2010 Metinvest-Ukraine increased its shipments of steel products to CIS countries by 90%—135,000 tonnes vs. 71,000 tonnes in the previous year. Belarus became the major steel-plate-consuming market while Transcaucasia and Central Asia showed significant demand for shapes and structurals.

07 December 2010 - Metinvest has successfully completed the registration of all its products under European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006, REACH), securing the ability to supply its products to users in the European Economic Area from December 1, 2010.

Tata Steel Raises Prices of Structurals in U.K.

07 December 2010 - Tata Steel intends to raise transaction prices for structural sections in the U.K. by £50 per tonne effective on all deliveries from January 2, 2011, due to continuing high raw materials costs and the need to set new, sustainable market levels.

Nippon, Marubeni-Itochu Invest in Cold Rolling Mill in Nigeria

07 December 2010 - Nippon Steel Corp. and Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc. have reached an agreement with Midland Rolling Mills Ltd. (MRM) in regard to equity investment in MRM. Both companies are to respectively invest US$3 million in MRM.

07 December 2010 - Severstal’s Cherepovets Steel Mill celebrated this week the start-up of its renovated hot dip galvanizing line, which is designed to eventually produce 400,000 tonnes of galvanized metal per year – twice the annual capacity of the previous line.

Nippon Steel’s Ecokote-STM Adopted in Fuel Tanks for Chevrolet Volt

06 December 2010 - Nippon Steel Corp. has accepted orders for its specially developed Ecokote-STM for fuel tanks to be manufactured by Spectra Premium Industries Inc., from Canada, for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range.

U. S. Steel, Kobe Announce Capital Investment for Pro-Tec Coating

03 December 2010 - United States Steel Corp. and Kobe Steel, Ltd. have reached an agreement for their joint venture, Pro-Tec Coating Co. in Leipsic, Ohio, to begin construction on a continuous annealing line at the facility. Completion of the project is estimated at 24 months.

ThyssenKrupp Nirosta to Transfer Production at Benrath to Krefeld

03 December 2010 - ThyssenKrupp Nirosta plans to transfer production at the Benrath plant in the south of Düsseldorf to Krefeld over the next five years, decided the company’s Supervisory Board. Work on the project is expected to commence in Krefeld in 2011.

Evraz Begins Construction of Rolling Mills in Southern Russia, Kazakhstan

03 December 2010 - Evraz Group’s Board of Directors has approved investment in new rolling mills in the Rostov Region of Southern Russia and in Kazakhstan. Both mills are expected to be launched in mid-2013.

Bhilai Steel Plant Sets Record for Converter Lining Life

02 December 2010 - Bhilai Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has set a national benchmark with Converter ‘C’ in its Steel Melting Shop-II recording 12,325 heats in lining life before it was taken down for relining. The plant broke its own previous national record for top-blown converters of 11,036 heats achieved by Converter ‘B’.

Huaigang to Modernize Rod and Bar Mill with Kocks Technology

02 December 2010 - Huaigang Special Steel Co. Ltd. placed an order with Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG for the modernization of its existing rod and bar mill. The modernization will implement a Kocks 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block, which is scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2012.

Essar Steel Commissions Blast Furnace, DRI Plant, and Meltshop

02 December 2010 - Essar Steel has commissioned a 1.73 million tonne-per-annum Blast Furnace and a 1.7 million tonne-per-annum mega DRI module, as well as phase 1 (2.5 million tonnes per annum) of the 5 million tonne-per-annum Steel Meltshop, at the Hazira (India) facility.

SAIL, Kobe Steel Sign MoU for Strategic Collaboration

01 December 2010 - Steel Authority of India Limited and Kobe Steel Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding for comprehensive strategic collaboration covering technologies, projects, and other areas. The two companies have already begun a feasibility study for a joint venture that utilizes Kobe’s ITmk3 iron-making process.

Posco to Build No. 4 Hot-Rolling Mill at Gwangyang

01 December 2010 - Posco recently decided to build the Gwangyang No. 4 hot-rolling mill and a new cold-rolling mill in India to increase its supply of hot-rolled steel coil to cold-rolling steel companies in the country, and to ensure stable material supply for overseas investment companies.

ThyssenKrupp Reports Results for Fiscal 2009/2010

01 December 2010 - ThyssenKrupp Group reported that order intake climbed 15% to €41,250 million compared to €35,970 million in the prior fiscal year. Sales improved by 5% to €42,621 million vs. last year’s €40,563 million. EBITDA increased by €3.0 billion to €3,224 million.
